Uncle Dale's Dynamite Compost

With much experimentation, laboratory testing and approvals, our nutrient rich compost is now available!

Compost is comprised of leaves, wood chips, hay, soybean straw, grain screenings and poultry inedible materials that have been heated to a sustained temperature of 55 degrees Celsius (131 degrees F), ensuring potential pathogen elimination.

This compost gets its name honestly, from the high nitrogen content provided by the feathers, blood and other inedibles from Schefter Poultry Processing. (A form of nitrogen can be used in the making of explosives.)

History

This compost has been used as a field corn and hay fertilizer since 2008, with excellent results. Garden use has also tested its effectiveness by the Schefter Poultry team, with some very large vegetables!

The name Uncle Dale's Compost comes from the owner of Schefter Poultry's mom and nephew Luke driving the garden tractor and wagon to Uncle Dale's to get some of his compost; the explosive results in the garden gave it the dynamite add on. Some plants have been killed in the early use of this product due to its high nitrogen content and over use, it is not mulch!

Ingredients

The primary carbon source in this compost is untreated wood products. The balance of the mixture includes wet feathers, blood, lungs, fecal matter swept from floor, condemned birds, and any eviscera not picked up from our facility.

Recipe

A typical day's compost batch at Schefter Poultry is made up of the following:

  • 10.8 yds of wood products
  • 1.2 yds of active compost
  • 1-1/2 yds of wet feathers
  • 65 gallons of blood
  • 30 gallons of lungs, kidneys
  • 135 gallons of viscera
  • 10-20 condemned birds

The mixture is put into a TMR mixer, thorough mixing is accomplished after 20 minutes. The batch is then windrowed in a covered licensed compost facility on a concrete floor. Windrows reach a core temperature of over 55° Celsius or 131° Fahrenheit by day 2. Windrows are rolled together and mixed a minimum of 5 times during the initial heating phase. Large piles are made and turned, keeping surface area smaller, continuing to keep the largest volume of material "hot". The large piles being turned ensure a consistent finished product as well.

Regulations

Uncle Dale's Dynamite Compost is produced in an OMAFRA approved composting facility onsite at Schefter Poultry. Following CFIA's guidelines for making compost, this compost has exceeded minimum temperatures, turning, and intervals required for pathogen and harmful bacteria destruction.

Rates

Application will vary dependent on the plant you are aiming to benefit. Corn absolutely loves this stuff, as well as trees and nitrogen loving vegetables. Incorporate 1/2" (1.27cm) of compost prior to planting corn.

For other vegetables, incorporate 1/4" (0.635cm) of compost.

When planting trees, dig a slightly deeper hole and layer 1/4" (0.635cm) of compost on the sides of the hole, then lightly cover with topsoil prior to placing the tree (do not have direct root contact with the compost). Spring application of compost around trees after leaves start growing and prior to a rain will detonate the growth of your trees.

Warning

Excessive amounts of Uncle Dale's Dynamite Compost can burn/kill plants. Open and measure compost on a hard cleanable surface or bare soil that will be worked. Excessive application rates are not recommended! For comparison, Uncle Dale's Compost has similar nutrients to poultry manure.
